Most importantly, I want to help you make an informed decision when you choose to hire your next tree service professional, even if you decide to go with another company. Tree Wise Guys fills a special niche between the do-it-all type landscaper who doesn’t really know that much about trees, and the high-dollar tree companies who don’t like smaller jobs. I run the company with a “no job is too small, few jobs are too big” kind of approach. Most importantly, I will make sure that we discuss all of your options, including those that can save you money. I don’t see customers as a one-time pay day; I want you to use my company again in the future. When you partner with Tree Wise Guys you will be joining the family, and will be treated as such. All of our services are compliant with ANSI A300, the industry best practice standards for tree care- so you can be sure that when we work on your trees, we know the latest techniques that deliver the best value to you, by optimizing the long-term health of your trees.

Before you remove that tree, you should check with your local government to find out if a permit is required for removal. In many cases it is, and the fines for removing a tree without filing the necessary permit can be quite steep. If you need help sorting through all the rules for your jurisdiction, as they can be quite confusing, we are here to help. Not only can we help you determine whether a permit is needed or not, but we can also help you with filing the permit, if you would like. Many tree removals, though, do not require a permit, depending on tree species, size, health, location, and other criteria. The purpose behind all of this is that many municipalities across Florida are recognizing the diverse benefits provided by trees, and there is a desire to preserve as much of the existing tree canopy as possible. Both Manatee and Hillsborough Counties, as well as the incorporated cities in these counties, have such laws on the books. It’s definitely something that you need to understand before removing a tree, whether you remove the tree yourself or hire it out to a tree service. If your chosen tree removal company gets it wrong, you could find yourself being fined. There was a huge case in 2019 in which the city of Tampa fined both the land owner and the tree service approximately $780,000 each for removing numerous trees without first obtaining a permit. If you live in Tampa, and are having trouble finding anyone willing to remove a tree, or you’ve already talked to tree professionals about removing a tree and they have seemed skittish, now you know why! Do You Need a Permit to Prune That Tree?
Some tree species are protected by law at many levels of government. As with tree removal, if you prune a protected species without securing the necessary permit, you can land in a lot of hot water, incurring very hefty fines. This is not a good instance to do it now, and beg for forgiveness later. There are highly organized tree conservation groups with a significant political voice in our area. They have many members who would just love to turn you in for removing or pruning illegally- and you can bet they know what to look for. In fact, many municipalities make this easy with an online reporting tool enabling citizens to inform the city of trees that have been over pruned. They are doing this because over-pruning of trees is a leading cause of tree weakness, disease, and death. If you’re not careful and hire “Cheap Charley’s Lawn & Tree Service”, and “Charley” over-prunes your palm trees because he is not familiar with ANSI guidelines, you may very well end up paying more in fines than you paid Charley. (Note: the name ‘Cheap Charley’s is intended to be fictitious and merely illustrative. If anyone reading this is named Charley and is using this name, I apologize, and will happily change the name in the hypothetical example- just let me know through the contact form). The fact is, I look at trees every day- lots of them- and every day I see trees that are dead, ill, or dying, with improper pruning often the leading cause. Tree trimming done improperly can rob the tree of vital nutrients, stunt and alter its growth in undesirable ways, and leave it vulnerable to damage from wind. Improper tree pruning also invites insect pests, can leave the tree susceptible to decay, and can spread lethal fungal diseases from one tree to the next. Don’t kill a valuable tree trying to save $20 by hiring an uninformed amateur. Contact a true professional here.
Tree Nutrition and Shrub Fertilization Advice
Tree Wise Guys also offers advice on tree and shrub fertilization. In our sandy soil, nutrients leach out very quickly. If your trees or shrubs are looking a little off-colored, are not vigorous, or seem to be getting attacked by insects or disease often, most likely poor nutrition is a contributing factor. This is certainly the case if your palm trees have been over-pruned repeatedly in the past, which is a very common mistake made by most landscapers. If your palms are being pruned only once or twice per year, they are being over-pruned (too much is being removed at one time). We can analyze your trees and shrubs for critical nutrient deficiencies, and advise you of a fertilization regimen that will enable your trees and shrubs to their reach their full potential.
